Volcano Winery

by AAS
(WA)

On my husband and my first honeymoon, we went to the island of Hawaii. We knew that the island was famous for its delicious Kona coffee, so we planned on doing a few coffee tasting and farm tour days. After a few days of this, we were reminded that my husband and I do not make good coffee drinkers. We are too wired naturally, and of course being on vacation just excites us more! We checked the phone book for local places to taste wine and discovered the Volcano Winery on the slopes of Kilauea. After calling the winery and being impressed by the receptionist’s description, we decided to drive over and make a day of it. Although the drive was quite long from where the hotels are located in Kona, as soon as we neared the winery I rolled down the windows and breathed deeply as we rolled slowly passed enormous ferns and gigantic ginger flowers. The scenery was incredible and even more otherworldly when the mist descended upon the winery in the late afternoon. The wines themselves were interesting, although not typical. There are many very unique flavors, including guava and other tropical fruits, and my husband and I finally decided on the Macadamia Nut Honey Wine and purchased two bottles for a very reasonable price.
