Temecula Wine Country is the only prominent winemaking area in California that's south of Los Angeles, an easy day trip from Palm Springs, San Diego, or Orange County. Because it is located so far from the vineyards and wineries to the north, Temecula Valley is often overlooked. The Valley is home to approximately 3,000 acres of vineyards. It has a dry, moderate climate, with evenings cooled by breezes from the Pacific Ocean. The soil is largely decomposed granite, so it drains very well. All of this adds up to excellent grape-growing conditions.

Many of the wineries are relatively small in comparison with their Napa and Sonoma counterparts, but this isn't a downside. It means more attention to visitors, and the chance to taste and buy wines that have only a limited release. There are many award-winning wineries in the Temecula Valley. Bella Vista has won several medals for its Petite Sirah wines and its Viognier. Mount Palomar Winery has received recognition for its Port and Solera Cream Sherry. La Cereza has won medals for their Grenache and Gewurztraminer, which earned Best in State. And Thorton Winery recently took the Double Gold for their 2000 Cote Red at the International Eastern Competition. As this selection shows, the Temecula Valley produces a diverse range of fine wines. Many of the wineries offer more than just tastings. Baily Vineyard and Winery has a cafe and a restaurant available on their property. La Cereza has a picnic grounds; you can purchase fine meats and cheeses to enjoy with your wine there. And if you are looking for a place to hold a wedding or concert, the Wilson Creek Winery and Vineyard has a 25-foot gazebo with a large lawn for seating. Finding a place to stay locally is easy. If you enjoy spa life, consider the South Coast Winery Resort & Spa. Golfers should check out the Temecula Creek Inn Golf Resort, with 27 holes of championship golf. So, if you are a wine lover looking for something different, check out the Temecula Wine Country. You'll find excellent wines, friendly and personal attention, and have a chance to snag something special that can only be purchased at the wineries themselves.
